Massage Continuing Education
Requirements

Continuing education (CE) is instrumental for your professional development and your ability to provide patients with quality care

Gain a better understanding of your ce requirements

1

Unlike other professions, the massage field requires that you stay abreast of the best ways to meet your patients’ needs while ensuring their safety and comfort. To achieve this, each state in the US has determined that all massage therapists must complete continuing education.
CE isn’t an optional part of being a massage therapist; in fact, you may be at risk of losing your license if you continue to see patients without keeping your CEs up to date. It’s best to consider continuing education as a part of your job rather than an extra task to complete.

Each state has set its own requirements when it comes to continuing education, so it’s best to look below to see exactly how many hours you need in your area. Most massage therapists need to complete between 12 and 24 hours every two years in order to renew their license. Some hours can be completed online, but it’s best to check with your state credentialing board for further information.

For many, continuing education is a great way to explore new areas of interest or learn more about aspects of the massage field that you’re already aware of. The state you live in could make some classes a requirement, like ethics or medical errors, but it’s likely that you’ll also be able to explore other options.

Above all else, make sure that every class you take is certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork and will count toward your total hours needed. If you have questions regarding a particular course’s eligibility or the requirements in your state, contact your local credentialing board.

2

All too often, massage therapists view continuing education as a “have to” aspect of their profession rather than an exciting opportunity. No matter the setting or state that you work in, engaging in CE can benefit you in a number of ways:

You’ll be able to renew your state license with ease
CE classes can help you to learn more about the massage business and attract more clientele

Some class settings will allow you to connect with others in your field and develop professional relationships

Your current skill set can grow exponentially by learning about new techniques and further solidifying your knowledge of practices you already use and follow
Specialty classes can help you to receive more referrals from local physicians

The opportunity that continuing education provides is ongoing, so it’s best to take classes regularly rather than waiting until several months before your license expires.

3

Rather than attempting to function as a secondary school-like setting, continuing education enhances what you’ve already learned when you initially received your massage license. You have a wide and general base of knowledge but CEs are designed to help you narrow your focus to more specific types of techniques and treatments.

While you could utilize continuing education in such a way where you learn a little bit of everything, it’s best that you maximize your time in one area of interest. Clients prefer visiting the most knowledgeable professionals in any given industry, so your patients will want to see you above anyone else if you’re the local expert in a specific type of massage.

While continuing education ensures that you stay abreast of current massage field rules and regulations, it also provides your clients with the ability to be far better served each time they make an appointment with you.
